Friends of Pskov experienced Russian sacred and secular music in a concert by the acclaimed vocal ensemble Voskresenije (Resurrection) from St. Petersburg at Perth Cathedral St Ninian’s on Thursday, 14 November 2019 as part of their UK tour.

This was the first appearance in Perth of this Russian choir under their musical director Jurij Maruk. Originally from Barnaul, West Siberia, Jurij has worked at the Marinskij Theatre in St. Petersburg as both a singer and conductor and was also choir master of the St. Petersburg Radio and Television choir.

Jurij founded the Voskresenije ensemble in 1993. It consists of a group of about eight or nine professional singers, including one of only two basso profundo singers in St. Petersburg capable of reaching the lowest notes required in Rachmaninov’s Vespers. Voskresenije have toured all over Europe, performing their blend of Russian music.

“Fabulous concert by the choir from St Petersburgh. Marvellous Russian voices. A real treat.” Sally Bonnar
