The International Plein Air in Pskov and Izborsk has been a popular creative residency destination for the artists of Perth and Kinross since 2003. This annual residency curated by Oleg Tsvetkov, Pskov-based artist and Director of the Art School in Pskov, culminates with a public exhibition at the art school featuring the resident artists’ work created during the plein air. In fact, Pskov Plein Air is not only part of the worldwide town twinning  movement. It also belongs to the plein air movement which has been advocating for creativity on location in the great outdoors since 1990s. Facilitated and supported by the Friends of Pskov, Gillian Devaney was the first Perthshire artist to attend the Pskov Plein Air in June 2003 followed by Andrew Hunter, Hugo Saunders and Dave Hunt in July 2013.

The artists spent an unforgettable ten days in and around Pskov, working and exhibiting with artists from France, Latvia, Germany, Estonia and other parts of Russia. Hugo Saunders has since returned twice to the Pskov Plein Air. Following our Friends of Pskov open call to Perthshire artists in March 2019, Barbara Pease was selected to receive the travel bursary for the 11th International Plein Air in Pskov and the first International Hansa Days hosted by the city of Pskov in June 2019. We caught up with Barbara upon her return to Perth for this short interview while looking forward to welcoming not only Barbara but other artists who participated in the Pskov Plein Air residencies over the years for a reunion as part of our Friends of Pskov inititative curated by Iliyana Nedkova and marking the 30th anniversary of the twinning of Perth and Pskov.
